MCRD Parris Island

On 15 February 1949, a separate battalion was activated for the sole purpose of training Women Marine recruits. This battalion has since been designated Women Marine Recruit Training Battalion and is the only such battalion in existence.

At the start of the Korean Campaign, 2,350 recruits were in training. From that time until the first Marine Division was withdrawn from Korea, Parris Island trained more that 138,000 Marines. We reached our peak training period in March of 1952, having 24,424 recruits aboard.

A Drill Instructors School, Recruiters School, Field Music School, Sergeants Major School and Administration Chiefs School have been added to the Recruit Depot.

Following recruit training and graduation, new Marines will go on to further their training.

To do such, the Marines report to the School of Infantry which is located at Camp Geiger, MCB Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Marines who are designated as infantry Marines are assigned to Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry for military occupational specialty training. After graduating from there, these Marines will be assigned to their first permanent duty station.

All non-infantry Marines are assigned to Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry for training. MCT reinforces and expands on the basic Marine-combat skills learned in recruit training. Following MCT, Marines attend their MOS schools to learn the trade they are expected to perform for the Marine Corps.
